My Response:
Hello ,
First, you said, you never believed in tongues until "the pastor laid his hands on" you and
"prayed that I might receive the holy ghost." Yet, the Bible says only apostles had such power
(Acts 8:15-17). No one else on earth had the power (nor has the power today) to bestow these
spiritual gifts on others. There is no question in my mind that what you call speaking in "tongues"
are utterances from your mouth, but what you are doing is not what the Bible describes. The
Bible describes "tongues" as languages (Acts 2:6, 8, 11). It is true that these apostles (later
certain Christians, I Corinthians 12:10) didn't need "3 months to learn it," and it was instantly
done. Yet, this does not prove that YOU (or I) can have such gifts today. When you read I
Corinthians 13:8-10, you can see how these gifts were "done away."
Furthermore, the use of the term "unknown tongue" needs to be explained. You're using
this term to mean some kind of tongue which can only be understood by God, and those He
"allows" to understand. Yet, the Bible uses the term "unknown tongue" to mean a language
(earthly language) that sometimes those listening did not understand (I Corinthians 14:2, 4). (For
example: like someone who only knows the English language could not understand one who
preached in German or Spanish.) Notice that Paul said he wished people could "prophecy"(v. 3,
5) because then the people could understand. He said those who spoke in tongues without an
interpreter were like a "barbarian" (foreigner) to the ones listening (v. 11). In other words, those
listening get no good from it. This says nothing about God "allowing" certain ones to understand,
but he does say those people speaking in tongues needed an interpreter, and "in the church I had
rather speak five words with my understanding , that by my voice I might teach other also, than
ten thousand words in an unknown tongue" (I Corinthians 14:19).
The Bible is "very clear" about the fact that tongue speaking was also done in conjunction
with those who interpreted, as well as those who had supernatural wisdom, supernatural
knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, and discerning of spirits (i.e.,
someone who could know who is telling the truth and who is not). Tell me, what miracles have
been DOCUMENTED where you worship? Has anyone where you go to church been able to
perform a miracle? If so, what was it, and show me the documentation. Has anyone you know
been able to raise the dead? Let me see the death certificate of the man who has been raised. I
bring these points up because all of these gifts went together according to God's plan (I
Corinthians 12:8-11). Since they went together, when they ceased (and they did), they all ceased
together. I Corinthians 13:8-13 speaks of those spiritual gifts, and says they would "fail,""cease,""vanish away," and "be done away." Paul goes on to say that what "abides" is "faith,
hope, charity" (love).
I pray that you might seriously consider these facts. Don't allow people to determine what
you do or do not do. Check out these Scriptures, read them for yourself, and see what the truth is.
I hope you have a good day.
Sincerely,
Jarrod Jacobs
