Question:
Does the New Testament endorse going to war?
Answer:
While I do not believe the New Testament "endorses" going to war, there is something to be said concerning a
nation's right to defend itself, and to execute justice at times. Paul wrote to the Romans, and discussed the civil government's responsibilities. He said, "For rulers are not
a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and
thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is
evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath
upon him that doeth evil" (Romans 13:3-4). Notice, the word "sword." "Sword" is indicative of fighting and
battle. There is something to be said about the right of a nation to execute criminals (John 19:10-11; Acts 25:11),
and then on a larger scale, this "sword" can be used in executing justice against nations. I do not believe the New
Testament "endorses" war, but I believe God has granted nations the right to defend themselves from those who
would choose to do them harm.
