Question:
What does the Bible say about divorce and remarriage?
Answer:
Let us go to the Bible and learn what Christ has said. When it comes to the subject of divorce and remarriage,
Matthew, Mark, and Luke record the words of our Lord on this subject.
Matthew 5:31-32 - "It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of
divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, (or
sexual immorality) causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth
adultery."
Matthew 19:9 - " And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall
marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery."
Mark 10:11-12 - "And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth
adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth
adultery."
Luke 16:18 - "Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever
marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery."
Therefore, four times in three books, Christ declares that the RULE is that one man marry one woman, and that
this marriage is to last for the rest of their life (Matthew 19:4-6). The EXCEPTION to this rule is that when one
commits fornication (sexual immorality), then the innocent mate has the right to divorce the guilty and remarry.Although man allows people to divorce and remarry for any reason, God does not. Therefore, we need to listen to
God's word (Acts 5:29), and realize that there is only one Scriptural reason for divorce, and that is fornication
(sexual immorality). This is what the Bible says.
