Question:
If we love God we will keep the 10 commandments as referenced in I John 5:1-2; Revelation 12:17, and 14:12.
Answer:
I appreciate the fact that this person who is asking the question has given us some Bible passages to consider in
the question. This is great. Therefore, let us read the passages referenced, and see if any of these speak about the 10
commandments.
- I John 5:1-2: "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that
begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God,
and keep his commandments."
- Revelation 12:17: "And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her
seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."
- Revelation 14:12: "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God,
and the faith of Jesus."
While these passages speak of "commandments," they say nothing about the "10 commandments." It is an
assumption on men's part to say that John meant the 10 commandments when he only said "commandments."
Remember that Jesus told the apostles: "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded
you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen" (Matthew 28:20). Notice, Jesus tells
the apostles (including John, the author of I-III John and Revelation) to teach people the things "I have
commanded," not what Moses commanded. Therefore, John and the rest of the apostles went out teaching, not
the Old Testament law, but what Christ commanded. It is to Christ's commandments that these passages above
refer, and not to the 10 commandments.
