Question:
John 14:20 says that the Father and the Son are one and the same.
Answer:
John 14:20 says, "At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you." Though we have
other web pages which discuss the subject of there being three in the Godhead; if I looked at no other passage than
this verse, one still could not conclude that Jesus and the Father are one and the same. Why not? Because the passage
which speaks of Christ being "in my Father" also speaks of men being "in" Christ, and Christ being "in" them.
Now, is there a time when men become "one and the same" as Christ? If so, when? The Bible never teaches such a
thing as men being one and the same as Christ, so why jump to this conclusion when discussing the Father and the
Son?
This passage is simply emphasizing the unity shared by the Father and the Son. It is similar in language to what
Christ said in John 17:11, when, while praying, He spoke of all men being "one, as we are." Therefore, to contend
that the Father and the Son are one and the same being, we need also to contend that Christ was praying that all men
would become "one and the same" being as well! If not, why not (also study: John 17:21)?
John 14:20 is not saying Christ and the Father are one and the same being, but simply emphasizing the unity
they enjoy.
