What Must I Do To Be Saved?

FROM: 10/6/02 Radio Program

Question:

John 1:11-15 says that one who receives the word of God is the son of God.

Answer:

John 1:11-15 reads thusly, "He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me."

Notice please that in verse 12, John speaks of those who have the right to become "the sons of God," not the Son of God! It is the difference between plural and singular words. According to Romans 8:15-17, there are those who can be claimed (through adoption) as sons, or heirs of God. Yet, when it comes to THE Son of God, there is only one who fits this description, for there is only one who is the "only begotten Son of God" (Jn. 1:14, 3:16), and that is Jesus the Christ!

Through faith and obedience to the word of God (Rom. 10:16-17; Heb. 11:6; Mk. 16:16), one can become a son (child) of God, but there is only One who is called THE Son of God, and this is our Lord Jesus who sits now at the right hand of God (Col. 3:1; Heb. 10:12; I Pet. 3:22).
