Question:
Does the Bible teach that churches can have recreation buildings, museums, libraries, etc.?
Answer:
Before we answer this question, consider this: Within the Bible, we have a divine museum wherein we learn of
the great heroes of faith (Hebrews 11). Further, this Bible is its own library, for within one volume, we have 66 books
(39 Old Testament books; 27 New Testament books) which declares God, His will, His plan, and what is necessary
for man to be saved and go to Heaven! To answer your question, let us understand that the church belonging to Christ has no such right. To support
recreational activities, museums, libraries, and other things is to go beyond the teaching of the Scripture and
beyond the scope of the church's work.
The work of the church consists of:
1. Evangelism: I Thessalonians 1:8; Philippians 4:15-16; I Corinthians 9:1-14; II Corinthians 11:8-9
2. Edification: I Thessalonians 5:11; Ephesians 4:12, 14-19, 29; Romans 14:19
3. Benevolence to needy saints: Acts 6:1-6, 11:28-30; Romans 15:25-26; I Timothy 5:16; etc.
This is the scope of the work of the Lord's church. It is spiritual in nature (Romans 14:17), and we need
to respect this. Certainly, recreational buildings, museums, and libraries have their place in society, but they have
nothing to do with the work of the Lord's church as is revealed in the Bible.
