What Must I Do To Be Saved?

Question:

Is artificial insemination a form of adultery?

Answer:

To answer this question, let us first define the word “adultery.” Adultery has to do with unlawful sexual relations between a married person and another person (married or unmarried) of the opposite sex. In contrast, artificial insemination (or invitro fertilization) is a medical/scientific process which combines the reproductive elements of two people (usually a married couple who have reproductive problems) in a lab somewhere in order to create a baby. Such scientific methods do not constitute sin, but serve as an aid for a loving married couple who wish to have a baby.

While I do not believe this process could constitute adultery, I can note several instances where the practice of artificial insemination (or in-vitro fertilization) has contributed to a break-down of the family. Consider Melissa Etheridge and other lesbians who have had their eggs fertilized by this process and then had them implanted so that they could become “mothers” without being married. Such people have ignored God’s ordinance about one man being married to one woman for life (Genesis 2:18-25; Matthew 19:4-6; etc.).

While the use of invitro fertilization can be a good thing in helping a barren married couple to conceive, it has brought about its own problems. We need to be cautious as we move forward in a society whose scientific breakthroughs often outrun our morality.
